Skin Tones: Sunburnt

Besides freckles I’ve been looking at sunburnt and sun-damaged skin.

The same approach I mentioned in Monday’s post applies here—look for the layers.

In this case that means look for the damage.

But then because I didn’t want to go all the way to dermatological textbook examples so I had to decide when to stop.

I stopped when it looked just too painful for me. Just to the point when I remembered how my skin felt after a day of building sand castles at Surfer’s Paradise, Queensland, in the days when sunscreen wasn’t readily available, and even less frequently used.

Ouch.

Now you know why I always wear a hat!

So look for the underlying layers. Look for the overall local color of sunburn. Look for areas in the face you can leave the white of the paper to really sell that burnt contrast. And or course don’t forget the shadows—cast and form.

Remember the ears and nose will always sell this, no matter how stylized you go.

Happy summer fair and beach sketching!

Yikes, I’ve spent a LOT of time in the sun and thank God my complexion doesn’t look like that! As always a fantastic job executing it.
