More Fun with Journal Grids

September 3, 2025

Here’s a finished grid from a journal in May this year.

I worked in a Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Journal  (7.75 x 9.75 inches, soft cover).

I pre-painted the grid squares using Nichiban masking tape and Montana markers. The spaces on the recto page were brushstrokes of acrylic color.

Sean was glued down first. I built the rest of the page over the following couple of days with, from top left: direct brush painting, doodle after watching sci-fi movie, vintage direct brush painting, Sean, doodle direct brush painting, blank (see note on what I think the blue square looks like), woman with a bird (doodle), dog portrait sketched from Pixabay photo, and woman from Earth’s World fairgoers.

There are collaged bits of artist’s tape used for the masking, placed around the spread. (The sketches weren’t done in that listed order, though the first row was done after I put Sean in a rectangle.)

Here’s the page spread with just the painted grid. Collage bits are more evident. Originally I’d planned to do a series of characters across each horizontal stripe on the recto page. I kept getting interrupted and let that idea go when I finished the verso page. The journal is always about changing plans in small and large ways.

I’ve written about grids and how I enjoy using them in a number of recent posts. Use my blog’s search engine (grids, thumbnail grids) to find other posts.

I think grids end up being a wonderful document of the collection of things that are floating around in our minds, things that are sparked by what we see and read, and techniques that we want to experiment with.

Start a grid page spread today and have some fun.
