If you desire to sketch at family gatherings and visits but it seems impossible this post is for you. If you already have sketching integrated into your life I suggest you stop reading and go sketch. Recently a blog reader wrote the following to me I love your posts and your portraits! How do you […]

More Changes for CR

It has been a long weekend of change. Friday we got a call from the care facility that CR would need to move into the memory ward. We had expected this day would come, but it still seems like it happened very fast.  His short term memory disappeared a couple years ago. Both Dick and […]

Graphite and watercolor sketch of a young man on Sktchy. (His hair really was that color.) 8 x 10 inch sheet of cold press Fluid 100 watercolor paper. I've been working for the past several months doing more pencil and watercolor sketches and less pen and ink. I'm really liking the Fluid 100 paper which is 100 percent cotton, especially the cold press for this type of work because of the texture it gives to the washes.

The One Time Dementia Is an OK Thing

So I’ve been working too much lately. Personal projects, work, teaching, and eldercare. I ran out of blog posts that were written ahead when I was ill in January, so I haven’t even had a moment to write a blog post. This weekend, after a brutal week, I organized everything so that I could go […]

Some Things I’ve Learned About Aging

Above: A quick ink and watercolor sketch of Phyl as she colors in her adult botanical coloring book. (She likes one from Lisa Congdon—and frankly I think Lisa’s are the best as the images are NOT psychedelically rendered with minute spaces too small for elderly eyes to color in. Besides having nicely sized shapes they […]

Testing a New Commercially Bound Journal While Out With the Folks

Above: Busy day with the folks. There are sketches and notes on the page from the visit to CR's eye doctor, but later in the day I sat and colored with Phyl—well she colored in her coloring book and I sketched. For some reason I started on the same spread, but that meant the coffee machine […]

April Is Almost Here…

Above: I'm not the only one attracted to the odor of the sizing in Arches watercolor paper. Des had to come over and check out the stack of cut watercolor boards Monday afternoon. He is very curious. I didn't have the heart to tell him they were for a project he's not involved in. Background It’s […]

Family Members Often Make the Best Models

Above: Dark purple Prismacolor Pencil sketch in an 7.5 inch square handbound book containing Nideggen paper. You can clearly see the wavy laid texture in the background and clothing. I love this paper. This is CR, Dick's 94-year-old father, sitting quietly, posing for me. I had just given him a hair cut. It wasn't […]

My 2015 End-of-Year Evaluation and Wrap Up

Above: 11 x 15 inch sketch on cheap ("I'll fall apart if you put wet media on me like you're trying to do" Paper), with Pentel Pigment brush pen and Pentel Dye-based brush pen with water. Selfie, showing my painting shirt, sketched while standing before a mirror in the bathroom. I was sketching Dick on this […]

Leisure Reading: with Movie Recommendations

Above: No that's not the largest pear in the universe. I was actually sketching the spices we'd just come home with and extended the drawing, loosing my comparison points. My bike was still leaning against another table in the under-construction-kitchen at this time. (The kitchen has been under construction for years, don't ask.) I got […]

Just Checking in on this Long Weekend—Keep Sketching

Left: Sketch of Dick while he was sitting on the couch. 9 x 12 inch sheet of Fluid (block) 140 lb. Hot Press watercolor paper which loves the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen (but doesn't do well with washes), and Montana Marker for color. If you’re reading this in the US I hope you’re having a happy […]
