Cynicism, Hope, and Painting’s Life Lessons

Above: Sketch of Dick sitting in the TV room next to a bright light. Read below for details. Friday was movie night and we watched “Welcome to Happiness.” It’s a quirky film that doesn’t have super heroes, mutants, or trips into galaxies far, far away. I enjoyed almost every moment, though more than once I […]

Moleskine Myths: They Open Flat?

Above: A quick sketch of Dick sitting on the TV room couch next to a bright light. I worked in a new Moleskine with the whiter, more absorbent paper. Look at the gutter area and the offset that prevented me from working across the page. There’s flat and then there’s flat. People who use Moleskines […]

Still Working Out What To Do About Those Eyebrows

Left: Water-soluble color pencil (Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer) and watercolor on Arches Cold Press Watercolor Board (8 x 10 inch board). Even though International Fake Journal Month is over I'm still working on that Arches Cold Press Watercolor Board with Watercolors. And Dick is still patiently sitting while I sketch him from life.  But now I'm shining […]

Family Members Often Make the Best Models

Above: Dark purple Prismacolor Pencil sketch in an 7.5 inch square handbound book containing Nideggen paper. You can clearly see the wavy laid texture in the background and clothing. I love this paper. This is CR, Dick's 94-year-old father, sitting quietly, posing for me. I had just given him a hair cut. It wasn't […]

Don’t Get Attached

Above: Puffin sketches made at the zoo in an 8 x 8 inch handmade journal which contains defunct printmaking paper. Verso: first sketches of the day made with a dried out Staedtler Pigment Liner. But I am having so much fun. I think I might have started to giggle. The puffins were sitting right on […]

Prismacolor sketch of Dick as he sat on the couch in the TV room. I took another crack at those eyebrows. 7.5 inch square handmade journal with Nideggen paper. Note: I don't usually let my mull show at the gutter, but this particular book was made in a class where one of the students mis-tore all his paper when I looked away for 30 seconds (really). After that I never looked away from him more than 10 seconds so my book has a very "gestural" aspect. But the student did leave class with a completed book!

Nideggen Is Great for Color Pencil Too

This is one of my favorite sketches of Dick. Nideggen is a great paper, and not just for ink, it works well with dry media like a color pencil as well. In fact, if you want to go really crazy on this toned surface with a full range of color pencils you will not be […]

Getting Ready for Sketching at the Minnesota State Fair—Gear and a Bag

Left: Here's a little blast from the past, a Guinea Fowl sketch I made at the 2009 MN State Fair. I'd taken a limited range of watersoluble color pencils. I mostly used them dry as in this example. I worked on 8 x 10 inch journal cards made of 300 lb. Fabriano Artistico, Hot Press […]

Battle Creek Canceled—I’m So Unhappy

Above: Sketch of Dean Winters on "Battle Creek" as Russ Agnew. Purple Grape Prismacolor pencil on Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media paper. Let's face it, Dean Winters acting in anything makes me happy. I don't care if he is playing Liz Lemon's ne'er-do-well Beeper King boyfriend Dennis Duffy in "30 Rock," Johnny Gavin (Tommy's police […]
