In Context: Meet Elvis a New Drawing Model

September 4, 2026
Brush pen studies of Elvis my new moose. In a 6 x 8 inch handmade journal of Arches Text Wove paper.

It has been awhile since I added to my menagerie of realistic animal and dinosaur replicas.

This spring after a physical therapy appointment Dick and I stopped in at Hub Hobby to see what they had on offer. It was literally one block off the highway and I didn’t even have to pout or cajole.

Pickings were very slim. I got the impression that whoever used to manage the section had lost interest. The figurines were jumbled topsy-turvy and all the dinos were smaller than I like; and those same dinos were painted very odd colors that would not be conducive for my drawing efforts.

But Elvis, this moose, was a different story. He’s not as large as some of my dinos but I think I’ll have happy hours sketching him, practicing angles and proportions in three dimensions—that will be useful when I work on cows, deer, and other even towed ungulates in the future.

Hope you have some drawing models ready for later today or this weekend—a trip to Como Zoo will give you a chance to use that visual vocabulary.

A ha! He looks like the Schleich Bull Moose? I loved his many shapes and forms viewed from different angles. I thought he was too small to work as a good sketching model BUT you may well prove me wrong!😉. He’s a real challenge to get “right” with that complex outline. I’m sure he will bring you many hours of fun sketching. Looking forward to seeing more of him👍.
