Sketching with Neocolor II Water-soluble Wax Pastels—Doodle of a Chicken

May 6, 2026
Here is the final version of the sketch I worked on in the linked video. Neocolor II on Annigoni Designo (the old version before the sizing change) in a hand bound book. The sketch is from a chicken doodle I made and then transferred on to the page spread. You can see the doodle and transfer in the first part of the video.

Today’s post is all contained in the video below.

In this video I discuss how to transfer a drawing using graphite transfer paper; build up a color sketch from my transferred doodle using Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastels; discuss different ways I use this art material; and provide a lightfastness chart.

I’ve come back to using this medium in the past month, after a long hiatus from it. You’ll see me playing around with color combinations and reacquainting myself with how these crayons can work for me. I hope you enjoy this video.

Please note that an additional video comparing KingArt Gel sticks with Neocolor II will be coming up either at the end of this week or next week. This all started because of questions I got about materials I used in my 2026 International Fake Journal Month journal. And of course I started looking around at other materials loosely in this same category and found the gel sticks. Check back if that’s of interest.

If the following video doesn’t play please use this link to view it on Vimeo.

Also, please note, for now I’m posting my new videos on Vimeo, not YouTube. Please take a peak at my vimeo page if you’re interested.

In the following video, if you’re not interested in transferring sketches, the sketching starts at about 22 minutes.
