Limited Palette From Leftover Paint

May 1, 2026
Sketch of an Earth’s World fairgoer using a Sakura Pigma Professional Brush pen. I used some leftover gouache (and one watercolor) to create a limited palette.

At the end of last year I was sketching in a 10 x 10 inch journal I had bound with Strathmore 500 Series Printing Paper.

This paper isn’t sized for wet media like watercolor. It’s meant to be printed on. But it was sent to me in large sheets and I thought, “Why not bind this?”

Almost all of the paper that comes into the house gets scrutinized for binding suitability.

Two reds (the third in the row is a mix with yellow ochre), yellow ochre, burnt sienna, PB60 (a watercolor) and a dark green I don’t recall. Six colors.

Have you recently put paint out on your palette for a project? Finished that project? Still have that paint on the palette? Now would be a good time to use it up. See how many limited palettes you can come up with from those leftover colors this weekend. You might find new favorite mixes, or discover a new mood.
