In today’s post I have a video of me sketching in brush pen and then painting with watercolor in a hand-bound book I made with Arches Text Wove Paper. I talk about the paper, the book I made, the materials I use.
This was made while I was still trying to work out where I’d keep Cerulean Blue Chromium in my palette.
I hope you have fun watching the video.
Note: I added my colors used incorrectly. I actually used 8 colors plus a little white gouache.
If the video doesn’t show up here you can see it over at my Vimeo page.
Below the video you’ll find the full sketch so you can click on it and look at it closely.

Another great character worthy of framing (IMHO)! :o). Your colour choices and brush vocabulary definitely “sell” the (faux) fur hat textures. I also love your rendering of his ruddy and weathered face. The eyes were really set in their sockets and came alive for me after you lightened his left eye then followed up with a few deft dark (shadow) brush strokes under his eyebrows…perfect! His beard has just enough detail to make it believable and frame the face without distracting from it. It’s always a treat, and great lesson, to watch you paint in real time. Thanks for sharing Roz!
Thank so much for the kind words about this portrait Paul. It was fun to paint on this paper, and I love texturizing faces!!! I’m glad you enjoyed this one. I have finished the book and am currently strategizing about clearing some space so I can bind some larger books with this paper. We’ll see. That’s for next year.
