In Context: Thoughts on Visual Note Taking

October 10, 2025

Visual note taking. We all notice things that matter to us. How much we develop those elements in our drawings…it depends on so many factors.

The point is to keep noticing.

Page spread in a Strathmore 500 Series Mixed media journal on which I pre-collaged a piece of grey Strathmore charcoal paper that had been used as a waste sheet when working with markers. (The blue, greenish blue, and pink marks on the grey paper.) Sketches made with a Sakura Pigma Professional Brush Pen FB and leftover watercolors.

The face on the right is on newsprint. I decided to keep it. I stuck it down on a yellow marker rectangle (Montana Markers) with masking tape (visible at the arrows). Below the chin the portrait is drawn on the existing collage on the page. I was working with vintage photographs from the 1800s.
