In Context: Painting on Drawing Paper

August 24, 2022
Brush pen and watercolor in a Hahnemühle Travel Journal.

After Monday’s long post, just a short post, with another painting on drawing paper.

I just finished the journal with this quick sketch and now I get to start a new one! It’s sitting on the drawing table waiting.

Below is a detail of the scan showing an area at the temple on the left where I didn’t wait long enough to go in with another glaze of watercolor. The damp paper doesn’t like that and will pill (as both Paul and I mentioned in Monday’s post.) But I think this is a small price to pay for learning a little patience! And I love the great browns and purples playing for attention in the hair. All leftover paint mixes that were lounging about on my palette after I finished another painting.

Detail from image. See paper pilling in left temple. Went in too fast with the next wash layer.

Some people create the most marvelous negative space with their ears and their sculptural hair.
