Are You Sketching Alun Armstrong?

March 8, 2021
Brush pen and ink wash on Fabriano Artistico in a hand bound journal that’s about 7.75 x 10 inches. I was watching “New Tricks,” when I sketched this. This is one of the many sketches I was making in February. Equipment issues are preventing me from scanning new March sketches, but they will be along shortly.

At the end of February I wrote about #MarchIsSketchAlunArmstrongMonth. Since then several people have joined in the fun. You can read about this project here.  I hope you’ll join in and start posting work. (Patreon subscribers a posting in a private group, but others are posting on instagram and other social media.)

Meanwhile, one of my students who is participating was looking for videos of Armstrong’s performances so she could sketch him. She found the stunning gouache portrait of Armstrong by artist Mina Miryanova.  (Miryanova posted her portrait in September 2020 and it isn’t part of the March celebration—she just has the great taste to pick a great model.)

Not only is it a fantastic portrait of Armstrong, but it’s a wonderful gouache painting, and you all know I love gouache.

So I suggest you go and watch her video and be inspired by her process whether or not you are joining in #MarchIsSketchAlunArmstrongMonth.
