A Little Bit of TV for the Pandemic

March 3, 2021
Actor Scott McNairy plays a sheriff who’s going blind. He’s sheriff of a town full of women—you’ll find out why there are virtually no men in town when you watch. Everything about this movie will break your heart, then break the leftover pieces of that broken heart into even more pieces, yet somehow make you feel more hopeful than you were when you started watching. Very quickly you’ll start to care about all these people, because frankly they all need a break. Here the nearly blind sheriff looks up at a stranger on a horse. You don’t have to be a fan of westerns to know that a man on a horse always has the advantage over a man (even a sighted man) on foot. You don’t have to be a fan of westerns to know that strangers in westerns are almost never well met. What the sheriff knows and what the stranger knows, and when each of them know it, and how each of them acts is just one moment you’ll remember long after the series is over.

I’ll have more to say about television for the Pandemic, but today I want to recommend something I watched while recovering from cataract surgery in 2019. If you haven’t watched it now would be a good time: “Godless.” (On Netflix.)

Scott Frank who created and wrote “Queen’s Gambit” wrote it.

It’s a Western.

The acting, the cinematography, the dialog, or at times the lack of dialog— will all take your breath away.

Amazing women characters fill this series. (Merritt Wever, Tantoo Cardinal, Michelle Dockery all have strong roles.)

There are SERIOUS gunslinging displays.

Jeff Daniels is in it.

He plays a villain, but that’s really too simplistic a way to describe what’s going on with his character.

Really. Are you still reading this? Haven’t you already started to watch?

It’s a Western…Jeff Daniels…

Roz, I cannot tell you how much I enjoy your posts. I am especially looking forward to your sketches (the drawing, the backgrounds…oh, oh) but the text you are putting down is like following your thoughts moving with a blizzard speed. I hope you have a nice day.

So glad you enjoy the blog. I do tend to go on at a rapid pace. Sometimes there is something of interest in all the nonsense.

I’m so glad you enjoy the blog. Thanks for letting me know.

I definitely do want a vaccination. I am not eligible here until April or May! But it will happen. Dick has had his first shot so I’m pretty relaxed about him now.

      Go watch a western today!
