Sketching Stuart with Watercolor

December 16, 2020

After doing so many sketches of Stuart in pen, I decided to sketch him in watercolor.

I was working in a Hahnemühle Drawing and Sketching Sketchbook. It contains a high quality drawing paper, but it’s not a wet media paper. I had to be careful not to use too much water, and not to work the watercolor when the paper was the least bit damp, or it would pill. (The page is about 8.5 x 11 inches.)

Some people might wonder why bother, but for me it’s the fun of the unexpected. (I’ve got a video of this sketch session which I’ll be airing on my Patreon site in 2021.)

Will I be sketching Stuart again? Yep, but I think next time I’ll use a watercolor paper and have even more fun!

I’m still noticing fun things about his face! Below is a detail of a portion of his face and the background. Texture fun on the background, but on the nose and the forehead you can see the paper is starting to complain!
