In Context: Looking at the Arteza Watercolor Book Part 4

June 12, 2019
Monochromatic direct brush sketch on a page in the large Artezma Watercolor Book.

Since there is no writing on this page in my Arteza Watercolor Book—direct brush painting with watercolor.

I used a 5/8 inch flat wash brush and also a size 10 watercolor round for some of this.

I should have worked a little harder to make enough wash for the background to not have it turn out so splotchy. I changed my mind about color as I was working and put in more probably before the paper could accept that (i.e., wait longer for it to dry). Watch that going forward if you work on this paper.

Below is a detail from the sketch.

Excellent chiaroscuro or tenebrismo. You are channeling Caravaggio and El Greco.

WOW! This is very inspiring, seeing how much you information you render with this brush-only monochromatic approach.

Thanks Stephen, this paper isn’t made for really fussy work, but you can get fussy on it. More to come.
