Look Around for Elastic Faces

March 18, 2019
A muse from the Sktchy App who has a very elastic face.

You’ll recall that last week I wrote about starting projects. My drawing examples were all faces. If you’re looking for muses to sketch and your family won’t pose for you (or can’t because your schedules don’t align) there are lots of folks on the Sktchy App who have elastic faces. Exaggerate them on not, it is very freeing to simply jump in and sketch without strict regard for proportions.

Take your camera out on your errand run one day and shoot photos of people’s expressions—the dramatic expressions you don’t see when you’re sketching from life as someone reads a book while sitting on a bench, or has a resting, bland face when immersed in his cell phone. Find some faces.

(Working on the old Gutenberg paper, which has lots of lovely fiber fleck inclusions and a yellowish tint; with a Sakura Pigma Professional Brush Pen and Schmincke Pan watercolors.)

Love your choice of colours here Roz! What a great facial expression, reminds me of the Joker in the Batman movies :o).

Thanks Paul. It was a lot of fun to sketch…I see this and am reminded I need to jump into another OLD Gutenberg journal, but it will be a while. I’ll just remember this fondly.

You keep referring to the Sktchy app, but I have only Android devices. Do you know of a similar app for all of us that don’t have Apple devices?

Cheryl I’m sorry but Sktchy is only on the iPhone and iPad and I’m not sure if they have any plans to expand to android devices.

I only have an iPhone and iPad so I’m unfamiliar with any apps available on other platforms or even how one gets them.

There are “life drawing sites” that you can find where there are model poses you can draw from and I believe many of those are on more than the Apple platform. Look at places like Croquis Cafe. I wish I could suggest something but I’m unaware of anything else like Sktchy.
