Part Three: Working in the Smooth Zeta Soft-bound Journal from Stillman & Birn

This is part three of a multi-part review of the smooth Zeta soft-bound journals from Stillman & Birn (S&B). You can see part one here. Yesterday I posted part two here. Working in Watercolor on the Smooth Zeta Paper I think it’s fair to say that most of my blog readers work with wet media—most […]

Using the Sakura Pigma Professional Brush pen in FB on the smooth Zeta paper. The lines are crisp, the pen is a bit draggy on this surface.

Part Two: Working in the Smooth Zeta Soft-bound Journal from Stillman & Birn

This is part two of a multi-part review of the Stillman & Birn (SB) Smooth Zeta Soft-bound journal. You can see part one here. Today I wanted to look at two approaches for which the smooth heavyweight Zeta is suited. Mixed Media Because of its weight the paper is particularly suited to collage and mixed […]

Working in the Smooth Zeta Soft-bound Journal from Stillman & Birn

A couple months ago I picked up a Stillman & Birn Soft Cover Zeta Book. I don’t use Stillman & Birn books. I don’t care for the way they make their hardcover books and their papers are either too lightweight, or in other ways not responsive to the way I work. With so many other […]

Cover of "The Essence of Watercolor," by artist and author Hazel Soan.

The Essence of Watercolour: A Book by Hazel Soan

Near the end of this past summer I received a note from Batsford asking if I would like to review a the Hazel Soan book: “The Essence of Watercolor.”  (I provided the above link to Amazon so you can read more about the book and see a flip through one reader has put up. I’m not […]

The first sketch I made on World Beard Day. I got a bit of a late start. I started large—this is about 12 x 18 inches, Pentel Brush pen and watercolor, with an acrylic marker background. For all my portraits I was using muses in the Sktchy App. So many great bearded men who post photos of themselves for us to sketch!

Sketching two pumpkins that I was given last year. I love all the knobby bits and the stems, and don't mid that I go off the page! Brush pen on the new Folio paper in a handmade book. (The tab at the spine was inserted at the binding to make room for collage throughout the book.)

Icelandic actor Porsteinn Gunnarsson as Eiríkur in "Trapped." Pentel Brush pen, watercolors, and acrylic marker.

Even More Television Viewing

Yep, a couple more TV show reviews today. I’ve been trying to keep track of what I’ve written about already.  Earlier this fall I watched “Trapped” on Amazon Prime. The action takes place in a remote Icelandic town. A headless torso shows up just as a storm blocks the town from outside help. The police […]

Actor Brad William Henke in his role as the vicious prison guard in "Orange is the New Black." 9 x 12 inch Fabriano Venezia journal. Sepia Pentel Color Brush and water to dilute ink.

More Television Viewing in October

While under the weather in October I used my couch time productively to binge watch the remaining episodes of the Netflix Comedy-Drama “Orange is the New Black.” I’ve enjoyed the show since it first came out. Set in a women’s prison the show has a strong cast of female leads and over the first five […]

A sketch of Martin, the star of "Downward Dog" television series. Pencil, pen, and watercolor on Stonehenge.

Martin: A Dog’s Eye View

I was disappointed to learn that ABC’s “Downward Dog,” was cancelled.  Huge mistake. This was a gem of a show if ever there was one. The show follows the life of the dog Martin as he talks (to the camera and in voiceover) about his life, his philosophy, and  the way his world revolves around […]
