Carl Has Come Home

August 28, 2017
Testing gouache and water-soluble Pentel Brush Pen in the Handbook Watercolor Journal (approximately 8 inches square). Some stenciling is also used. Look in the corners and top and bottom of the pages. I put color in the background because orange paint had seeped through from another spread and I thought orange everywhere drew the eye away from the seepage. Carl assured me all eyes would be on him so it wasn’t necessary but knows I like to make textures so “knock yourself out.” He’s been a little more full of himself since he returned.

Confused about Carl Too (see Friday) and Carl?

Carl was my first Giganotosaurus model. He’s a Schleich, but he’s really large. I’ve never seen another one of their models be this large. He’s the only one I’ve seen in person. The last at the hobby store and then there were none.

But I’ve enjoyed sketching him and he often goes off and has adventures. He’s been gone for a long time and so Carl Too, who is a smaller version with an articulated jaw and a lovely paint job, has been modeling for me.

That’s all there is to know about that. (Yes I spend a lot of time alone in the studio.)

Oh, and Carl asked me to make clear to you that a Giganotosaurus is larger than a T-Rex. (And Des likes to point out that Spinosaurus is larger than Giganotosaurs. Don’t worry. Des is Carl’s best friend.)

Note: I’ll do a review of the Handbook Watercolor Journal sometime after the Fair. I do like it for brush pen and you know that a huge deal for me. Some of the original issues I had with this commercially bound journal when they first came out haven’t surfaced in my current tests. But I’ve got about 9 spreads left!

I see some of my fellow watercolorists using the Handbook WC book so I’m looking forward to getting your review. Have a great Fair!
