Summer Reading at the MCBA Visual Journal Collective

June 20, 2016

Above: Pentel Pocket Brush Pen sketch with gouache. This is a quick sketch I made using colors set out for another project—forcing myself to use pigments I don't normally use. Shinola Sketchbook test journal; spread 16 x 9.5 inches.

Tonight at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts the MCBA Visual Journal Collective is going to have their Summer Reading Evening. Everyone brings his/her favorite or most inspiring art or art-how-to books and explains why the book is inspiring and then shows journal examples worked up from that inspiration.

Come and join us—bring a book or two that has inspired your journal work. Of course bring your journal too so we can see your work. (You can also bring a magazine article if that inspired you.) Perhaps it encouraged you to try a new tool or medium—or revisit a tool or medium you had set aside.

And who doesn’t like to look inside other people’s journals?

If you want details about the meeting you can contact the group coordinator Suzanne Hughes at the MCBA Visual Journal Collective’s public Facebook Group. (In fact you could go and join that group and stay current on what is happening.)

I’m going to bring a couple books that have been inspiring me to work with drawing from my imagination. (The model of the above sketch is real, but I added the mask.)

(I also want to say the paper held up really well to the abuse of these layers of gouache—but I’ll review the book at a later date, when I’ve finished it and have gathered my thoughts.)

Below: Detail of the above image.

Sounds like a fun evening. I hope, when the event is over, you’ll share here which books you took. I can’t remember the last time I drew from my imagination–probably not since elementary school.
