A January Selfie

February 12, 2016

160105_Selfie_tumbledownCLeft: I ended up doing a bunch of large (12 x 16.5 inches) self portraits with brush pen in January. Usually long after I really should have been in bed. Dick thinks I look too tired, but he'd already gone to bed so he doesn't actually know does he? Wave paper from Kunst and Papier, and the Pentel pigment brush pen with squeezy barrel.

It's just fun to get some lines on paper. I hope you have a great weekend sketching.

When it comes to self-portraits, getting a few lines on paper never feels fun for me. This is an area where my inner critic works hardest to stir up feelings of perfectionism and self-loathing. Just thinking about sketching myself makes my palms sweat. And if I do attempt it, I find myself wanting to hyper-edit my drawing. So, I tend to avoid it altogether. I’m always impressed by artists who are comfortable sharing their selfies, especially after feedback such as their spouses thinking they look too tired. 😉 I love that line can become more important than self.

SusanLily, we have such little time to explore not only the world, but what we look like that I think it’s important to spend sometime doing that and breaking the illusions we have about ourselves.

I think your internal critic doesn’t want you to go down this path because he has more to lose than you do from an honest, unflattering selfie.

Give it a go. It’s fun.

Thanks, Roz. This is a lot to take in, but I’ll try to get my mind wrapped around the idea that my IC has more to lose from an honest, unflattering selfie than I do!

Linda, you can find out about upcoming classes by signing up on my email list. See top of the left column just below the gull sketch that says “Classes with Roz.” There is a little form to fill out.

I don’t know how iPods are organized or what they are capable of running, so I’m sorry I can’t tell you if it’s possible to take a class on one.

I would guess that the system to run them is sufficiently different that it would NOT be possible, but that’s just a guess on my part.
