About This Class
In this class I will teach you step by step how to create an elegant and sturdy journal that is 6-1/8 x 8-1/4 inches. It will be filled with Gutenberg paper (a printmaking paper that stands up to all the media I like to throw at it: pen, watercolor, gouache, pencil, colored pencil, markers).

Another great thing about this structure is that I have simplified the process of making a round back spine book. I’ve eliminated several labor-intensive steps while focusing on maintaining a sturdy book structure. This book can be made in a shorter period of time than one using traditional methods.

I also believe that it is not necessary to have expensive binding equipment. My lessons can all be accomplished with a few standard tools you probably already own if you are involved in any sort of paper arts. And if you’re just starting out, the few tools you might want to buy (such as a bone folder and an awl) are inexpensive.

I have been teaching bookbinding for over 25 years. For this class I have created 30 videos that clearly demonstrate each step of the process in making this book. There are five and a half hours of demonstrations and instruction.

This class is as close as I can get to bringing you into the actual classroom with me. If you took a day long workshop with me this is what you would learn.

Teaching a skill isn’t enough for me. Along the way I share with you my understanding of bookbinding’s traditional methods. You’ll learn why certain steps and methods matter. When you understand the reasons for each action you can focus on developing your skills to generate repeatable results. Then when you’ve finished the class you’ll be able to continue to practice those skills. You’ll be able to use your knowledge to create more books tailored to your needs.

During this offering of this class I will be in class each day of week one. I will continue to check in during May, in general every other day, to answer questions and keep you moving. You will be able to post images of your work so that I can give you advice.

I will also conduct four live webinar/questions sessions during the early weeks of the class. These webinars will be held Saturday. May 7 at 4 p.m., and Saturdays, May 14, 21, and 28 at 1 p.m. All times are CST. If you happen to be in a time zone where you can’t join in, don’t worry, the event will be taped and made available to the entire class.

I hope you’ll join me and begin, or continue, your love of books by making this journal.
