I Can’t Help Myself, I Just Have To Show You This…

OK, so everyone who reads my blog knows that I love "Foyle's War" (which has sadly ended its run with the release of the final episodes earlier this year). And everyone also knows how much I adore Michael Kitchen as Foyle.

So the other day I was doing another sketch of Kitchen as Foyle. Sometimes when I scan things and prepare the file for the web I hit the wrong keys.

150320_MichaelKitchenCRInvertLeft: The inverted version of today's image.

On the day I scanned this sketch I hit the "invert keys" in Photoshop. The second image in today's post was the result.

There's nothing earth shattering to say about this, but I do feel it gives an impression of my earliest marks, obscured by later shading choices in the final sketch. The whitest lines in the inverted version are those first lines of ink I put down: eyebrows, eyes, nose, lips, ear; and then the last lines, some darker hair bits when everything else was finished. So for me looking at it now it's like looking back in time.

Anyway, that's the way it struck me today so I thought I'd share it. (Always work on copies of your original scan so you never write over your original file and have to scan again—I've had that down pat for decades, because sometimes the fingers just stray to other keys.)

Here's another inversion (the original for this sketch was in color) if you want another bit of fun.

Love this. It’s too sad Foyle’s War is over. Maybe we need a letter writing campaign to have them make a few more!! Michael Kitchen is so great in his role. Going to miss him and Honeysuckle. At least we have so many shows to watch again. I hate to admit how many times I have watched some of the early ones while jonesing for new shows or entertaining my parents aged 89 and 92. One of the best shows on ever I think!

Thanks jacki, I really enjoyed sketching Stefan on Top Chef (my handwritten note of his name was incorrectly spelled) and I love that inversion too.

I find that Foyle’s War is fun to rewatch, esp. since it has been a long time since I saw the first episodes, so at least that’s something.
