Monday, April 19, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mark your calendar for the next MCBA Visual Journal Collective meeting! Keeping with the notion of April and spring, our speaker will be Karen Engelbretson, local graphic designer, artist, and teacher. She will talk to us about botanical sketching and show examples of her own botanical work—including letterpress printed examples. Following her talk we will all try our hand at sketching plants and pods!

About the Speaker
Karen is a graphic designer for print and web communications and principal of KJE Design LLC. She has studied botanical drawing and painting since 1998 and teaches artistic composition and botanical abstraction at the Minnesota School of Botanical Art in Minneapolis. Karen is also the creator of KJE Felties, needlefelted birds and animals.

Karen is president of Polk County Association of Lakes and Rivers, a county-wide water protection group in Wisconsin where she maintains her family’s 100-year legacy on Bone Lake. She is active in aquatic invasive species prevention, native plant and wildlife habitat restoration. She donates her professional and personal time to these efforts on Bone Lake and other area lakes.

A native of St. Paul, Karen recently moved home, studio and design office to Grant, MN (near Stillwater) where her entire family enjoys a large creative space. Together with her husband and daughter they operate Kiss Letterpress, a small format letterpress print shop.
