“Foot in the Door Show” at the Minneapolis Institute of Art

February 10, 2010

Don’t miss the opening of the MIA’s Foot in the Door Show!

Curator9238 Left: The Curator at the Foot in the Door Show is a 12 inch cube! Any piece of art that fits in the cube can be admitted, as long as there "are no living plants or animals, food, body fluids or wet objects, hazardous or toxic materials, or anything with an active insect infestation."

Thursday last week was the first drop off day for the MIA's "Foot in the Door Show." My friend Linda and her father Dean both went around 1 p.m. to turn in their artwork and had a 2-hour wait! When I went on Friday around 2 p.m. I was expecting a similarly long line, but was pleasantly surprised—I think I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. The line moved quickly. I think there were about 40 people in front of me.

While in line the woman behind me struck up a conversation—she didn't have her paperwork completed. While explaining what she needed, I forgot to take photos of the line, but I did get a shot of the curator.

For people in the Twin Cities mark your calendar for the opening of this show:

Opening: Thursday February 18, 6 to 9 p.m.
Show runs through June 13, 2010.

I don't know how many entries will be in this show, but my tag is numbered in the 1200s.

BantamP9167 Left: Bantam, 10 x 10 inches, acrylic on canvas. A little preview for folks who aren't in the area and can't get to the show. (This quick photo doesn't show the turquois in the dark areas—but hey, that won't be visible from the floor either!)

Because the walls will be literally wall-to-wall with paintings (3-D works are also accepted if they fit in the 12 inch cube) I painted a 10 x 10 inch Bantam that would be sure to read from 10 feet (or more?!) up on the wall. I based my painting on a journal sketch from September 2009. See the bantam journal sketch here.

I hope to see you at the opening—celebrating the diversity of artworks from Minnesotans.

What fun! I wish they would do something like that here. Once I wanted to show a collage I made, but it was $30 to submit, and then someone was to decide if it was “worthy” enough to show. So, I attached it to the back of my denim shirt and wore it to the opening..haha. It was fun, I showed it and got a lot of comments!
A friend won 1st, prize in one of the categories (and $100), and treated me to dinner. It was a good experience.

Through the wonders of the interwebs, I “know” two people who have entered a piece in the Foot in the Door Show”! My friend Dulcey entered a blue/tan vase made entirely of seed beads.

Kelly, I’ll keep my eyes open for your friend’s piece. When I heard there were 5,000 entries or there abouts and started doing the math (each person brings only one other person), and then a note from the MIA telling us to not wear our bulky coats (!) and to carpool, I decided the exhibit would be more fun to see later with my friend Tom—and we have plans to do so.
