Note: This post continues the State Fair prep series begun August 12!
Monday, August 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnesota Center for Book Arts in Minneapolis, the MCBA Visual Journal Collective will meet to PREPARE FOR THE MINNESOTA STATE FAIR!
Three guest speakers will give tips on sketching at the Fair!
Join us on Monday when the dynamic artistic duo Roberta and Ken Avidor give tips on observing and sketching people at the Fair! (As you can see from Ken's piece—animals too!)
And I'll be on hand to talk about sketching animals in barns, pens, and crates—some insights I've gained over the years. Where not to stand—and why! What to watch out for when sketching ducks and chickens. (Sure you'll read some of this in my Prep Posts, but it will be more fun to come and meet with the group.)
After the presentation members will be encouraged to share their State Fair Journals with the group. And as usual we will chat about materials.
It doesn't matter if you have never sketched at the State Fair—this will be a great opportunity to get psyched up for it.
Right: Two sheep in "outfits"; one of my journal cards from 2008 Minnesota State Fair Journal. Pen and gouache on pre-painted 300-lb. Fabriano Artistico Hot Press watercolor paper cards. I noticed when putting this post up that I never got around to adding this journal to the journal list on my website. I'll have to do that. In the mean time you can see selections from other years: 2007; 2005 (I guess I didn't get around to posting 2006 either!); 2004; 2003 (State Fair Journals from before that aren't on line, but you get the idea.)
Best of all, we will finalize details for the Collective's State Fair Sketch Out, Tuesday, September 1, 2009!
(I'll post details for the Sketch Out on my blog after the meeting but why not come and join in the discussion?! Note that Tuesday is also reduced-admission day: tickets are $9 at the gate, the same price you'd pay for tickets purchased in advance.)
The meeting is free and open to the journaling public—i.e., any adult who keeps a visual journal, or who wants to start keeping one and isn't quite sure how to go about it. We've got lots of friendly people, and three State Fair Veterans, all set to help you do just that. See you on Monday!
