Looking into the Promised Land: Gate 5 at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds

Above: Sketch of Gate 5 at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds, using Staedtler Pigment Liner (0.7) and a Nji waterbrush with Daniel Smith watercolors. This is my new journal, which I started today. It's 6.5 x 8.25 inches and has Gutenberg for text pages so the pages are a light oatmeal color, not white.

Last night I actually got to go into the Fair Grounds to see a preview of the fine art exhibit at the State Fair. (I'll write about this on another day when I collect my thoughts.)

I thought I might drool all over my friend's car as we drove through the grounds, up and down the various streets—it's like a small city. But luckily for me only a few vendors were open and serving food to workers so the smells of the Fair weren't really in full force.

Today, on the way back from my acupuncture appointment I decided to swing by the front gate and sit and sketch. Biting ants invaded my bus bench so I worked faster and faster (and took a shower when I got home just now). Still it was fun to sit and gaze in. I wasn't avoiding drawing people, most of the action was taking place inside the gates.

And for people familiar with this intersection, yes I left out the street light on the left—my concession to the invading ants!

Reading all your accounts of prep for the state fair inspired me to go to our local county fair. When I mentioned it to my kids (13 and 10) and my 10 year old asked “What’s a fair, mom?” I knew it was necessary to visit. Thanks for the inspiration. I only had a bit of time to sketch as I was with my kids, but what fun!

YES! Kirstin, I’m so glad that you got your kids to the county fair! I hope that they enjoyed what they saw there and that a life-time of interest in Fairs has been born! I’m so glad that my writing encouraged you to do that!

Lyn, so am I. I’m interested to see what I’m going to get, whether I’ve made good materials choices, and of course I am dying for some Salt Water Taffy!
